Winter has come

When you live in Oklahoma, you're short on snow...so you have to take advantage of any winter weather you get. Daniel made the best of it...that is until he got hurt. (Thank you to my amazing husband for figuring out how to upload video. I was ready to hurl the computer out the window!)

The perfect "fix"

Last night, Phil asked Abbie, "Did you have a hard day?" She replied, "Kind of...but now I'm going to another world!" and she opened her book & was soon immersed in fantasy.

Who needs a slip & slide?

Not my son. All he needs are some pillows, a laminate wood floor, and plenty of room to run, dive & slide.

On another note, we are without water today. Well, sort of. Phil turned it on so I could take a shower this morning & again to start the dishwasher & a load of laundry. Now he's tearing into the wall to fix it. A pipe below the bathtub has sprung a leak; he had to go behind the built-in drawers in the hallway to get to it...the advantages of being married to a self-employed handy-man.

I've started on our taxes. Last year I was nervous about doing it myself. I wasn't too confident about figuring out 3 different incomes & making sure I had everything in the right place, so I took it to a tax firm. They couldn't tell me the cost up front; it depended on how many forms there were. $592 dollars later...I learned my lesson to never do that again! I did all the work; they got all the glory...or money, anyway. So I'm sorting through the paperwork myself this year, and I feel very confident that it's totally worth $600 of my time and effort.

Grace had her class chapel this morning & it was very cute. They played "Faith or No Faith" (like "Deal or No Deal"). Each child was the "model"; 4 suitcases were empty & 5 each held a letter that spelled out "FAITH". The teacher told a Bible story & the contestant had to decided whether that person had faith or no faith. They ended w/ the song:

Without faith, it's impossible, it's impossible
it's impossible to please God
he who comes to God must believe that He is
and He rewards those who please Him

All things are possible, all things are possible
all things are possible, just believe
God will do anything that He said he will do
and He rewards those who please Him

It was fun to hear my shy girl belting out her beautiful voice; I couldn't have been a prouder momma.

"Just keepin' it real"

I enjoy reading The Pioneer Woman's blog now & then. Her photography is amazing, the recipes are easy & yummy, and her stories are hilarious. One of her favorite phrases is "Just keepin' it real" and it seemed appropriate for this Monday.

I want my house to be neat & clean 100% of the time, but reality is it's only clean 3% of the time. For this reason, I throw up my hands & say "what's the point?!?" until company is coming & I am required to clean. The other day, a customer stopped by unexpectedly & stayed to visit; it wasn't until after she left that I noticed my bra laying in plain view on the living room floor. Don't ask how it got there...I will not discuss such things on this blog. :)

After I took the kids to school this morning, I turned on cartoons for Daniel & went back to bed...until 10am. I am such a slacker.

I often wish my husband was not self-employed for the simple reason that I could sit & read a book all day without having him looking over my shoulder, asking, "Is that all you're going to do today?"

I threw myself a pity party on Friday afternoon & had a good, ugly cry. I tried talking it through with a close friend, but she could hardly understand me for all my snorting. Nothin' like a good friend to love you even when you're being ridiculous.

I do not not like to be micro-managed. Some times I want to say, "You're not the boss of me!", just as my youngest did to a "babysitter" the other day.

Losing weight is too much work. It's much easier to eat ice cream while I watch The Biggest Loser. A friend told me (I wasn't really looking...) about a place to exercise that is reasonable cost-wise, but if I pay to go, then I would actually have to go. Dilemma...

So there you have it. The real me. Scary, huh?

Inclusivity

We're not exactly sure what brought it on, but for whatever reason, Daniel has been very concerned for his friend, Kate. On Monday he was determined to make a sign & hang it on the front door. He dictated these words: "Kate is my friend. Kate is allowed in our house to play with me!!". We asked him why it was necessary to hang said sign on said door, and he stated: "Because then she won't feel left out."

The end result

I actually finished something! Daniel was disappointed that his whole room wasn't painted orange, but overall, the boys love their "new" room. Their favorite thing is the shelf Phil installed above their desk. It's the perfect place to display all their stuffed animals. They chose one or two to sleep with, but mostly they line them up & go "huntin".

Finishing projects

By now, if you know me at all, you know that I am terrible at finishing projects. Fortunately, I'm in good company at my house, because my husband has the same affliction. Only his projects are more visible & on a larger scale than mine, so I'm hoping that helps detract from mine. Today I am determined to finish what I started many weeks ago. Before Christmas, my friend came over & helped me measure & tape off a strip around the boys' bedroom, which I painted orange, at Daniel's request. My husband (and my dad) have let me know on several occasions that I "did it the hard way", but I've enjoyed that orange strip for several weeks. Monday I started on the gray & I hope to have the room finished this afternoon & all the furniture back in place before bedtime tonight.
Don't you think the antler mount/hat rack adds so much to the decor? :) The weekend before the kids went back to school, I attacked their rooms with garbage sacks in hand & got rid of about a sack & a half full of junk from each room. I bought a shelf to go up over the desk & I can't wait to have everything organized & back in its place. I know I don't do it very often, but when I finish something I have to brag about it...a little. Though I'd better not start my bragging until it's actually completed!

So it's back to work...
